The moment when China’s first lady Peng Liyuan made her diplomatic debut upon her arrival at Moscow, wearing a dark navy overcoat, a light turquoise silk scarf with a matching handbag, the Chinese fashion industry got a boost.

Labeled by Internet fans as the real Liyuan style, China’s first lady Peng Liyuan’s fashion acumen won considerable praise from her followers when she made her diplomatic debut during her arrival in Moscow on March 22.

Images of Peng stepping off a plane arm-in-arm with her husband, President Xi Jinping, have circulated widely on the Internet, prompting praise for her style, which Web users described as understated and sophisticated.

Fashion critic Yue-Sai Kan spoke highly of Peng Liyuan’s wardrobe and fashion sense at a press conference for the launch for her new book “Life is a competition” on March 26 in Beijing.

It’s not clear which company or companies designed the clothes worn by Peng in Moscow. But people get the information that these clothes are local style. A newspaper said that Peng was wearing a jacket and purse made by Exception de Mixmind – a top-end Guangzhou-based brand – while another report on news portal Sohu.com said the Guangzhou Administration of Quality and Technology Supervision confirmed that Peng’s clothes were custom-made by Ma Ke, the chief designer for the WuYong brand.

However, regardless of the brand, Peng’s endorsement of Chinese labels has surprised millions of Chinese who favor foreign fashion brands.

A number of Taobao sellers have begun offering garments based on styles worn by China’s first lady Peng Liyuan.

The first lady’s style was dubbed by netizens as Liyuan style. The exact purse and coat she donned have become top search items on taobao.com, a major shopping website in China. Also, Exception’s physical stores have seen a rising number of visitors.

US First Lady Michelle Obama also serves as fashion icon. She wore a custom-made Jason Wu gown for her two inaugural balls, bringing sudden fame to the 26-year-old designer. Obama’s colorful selections – ranging from J. Crew to Jason Wu – have boosted the American fashion industry, said fashion critic Jiang Xingyi.

Domestic fashion brands’ stock prices were also boosted on Monday by the first lady’s choice. Local designers and fashion brands always get a boost when the wives of State leaders choose domestic brands for important occasions. For local fashion brand and designers, it is another fantastic fashion PR strategy.

  1. This truly shows how much buzz a brand can generate by having the right endorsement. (A PR lesson). Even though the First Lady may have dressed up just like any other day, they fact that she is an icon makes the brand stand out. This is also true of Michelle Obama, who looks stunning in her dress whenever she makes a public appearance. It is a fact that looking good is good business, and how you dress is how you will be addressed. All it takes is a chance at the “spotlights,” as long as she dresses simple but elegant, the first lady may as well be an iconic symbol of Chinese domestic fashion.

  2. It’s crazy how a figure in society can become such a fashion icon. Throughout U.S. history the First Lady has become a fashion icon. They’re able to showcase their style on an international stage for all to see. It’s a great way for small unknown brands to get noticed. Jason Wu designed Michelle Obama’s Inauguration Ball dress and he’s become very popular with actresses and others who can afford his designs 🙂 I think it is a way for fashion PR to take advantage of the Chinese First Lady’s style. It’s a way to give that spotlight to domestic Chinese brands, expose the country to something different.

  3. Ha, it seems the First lady is revealing new fashion trend in China.

    Personally, I don’t think he first lady would be the label of domestic fashion in China. However, the phenomenon shows her influence. Looking back to the previous first ladies, it is easier to find out not every one has such a huge impact on the fashion trend. Why? The reason is simple: Peng Liyuan is a well-known singer herself. Taking away of her label as the first lady, she is still a celebrity who owns thousands of fans. (My mom is a huge fan of her…) so it is common for fans following their idol.

    So, basically, she is different from the previous first ladies because of her own identity. Maybe that is why she attracted so much attention this time.

    This is really an very interesting post in terms of how a political figure can influence the fashion world. However, the fact told us: political figures does impact significantly on domestic fashion trend. As you mentioned in your blog post, people follow up with Peng Liyuan’s style: they search for her handbag, comment on her different coat, and even dig into the exact brand she is wearing.

    The handbag brand “EXCEPTION例外” soon became widely known in fashion community because that’s what the first lady carried with when she visited Russia with President Xi. This is like a PR dream for the brand. Domestic luxury brands gradually gets attention because of the first lady.

    Anyway, she is gorgeous. Before she was the first lady, she is already famous for being a famous singer(it’s kinda like the super star or celebrity back when our parents were young).I like her personally.
