Hello Grandpa Style!

Do you remember what your grandpa is wearing today? Most grandpas might wear old-fashioned cloths and stay away from the word “Fashion”; at least it is true in China.

However, Grandpa Style becomes very popular in China last year. Photos of a 72-year-old man posing as a “female” model in stylish clothes went viral on the Internet after his granddaughter posted them on her clothing store on Tmall.com, China’s largest retail website.

Wearing aviator sunglasses and a selection of thigh-high tights and frilly skirts, 72-year-old Liu Qianping has caused quite a stir in China.

In the past few months, images of the former farmer from Hunan Province in China have appeared on Taobao, the Chinese version of eBay, marketing clothes for Yecoo, a business set up by his granddaughter Lv Ting and four of her friends.

Lv invited her grandfather to visit her in the southern of Guangzhou, and while unpacking boxes of clothes to sell, he pulled out — and slipped on — a hot pink cloak.

Struck by how well he wore it, a friend assembled some amateur lighting and starting taking photos that were later posted online.

There’s Liu in a white tights, a pink skirt and a fur-lined red polka dot coat.

72-year-old Liu Qianping, also known as "MaDiGaGa", poses during a modelling shoot in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou

Liu’s posing demurely in bright green leggings, clutching a handbag and wearing a layered pink shawl.

Sometime he wears a wig, sometimes not, but the aviator glasses are always present.

The skinny grandpa sported mini-skirts, long stockings, cloaks and other girlish dresses in those photos like a super model. The smiling man sometimes wore wigs and looked like a teenage girl.

Liu has attracted a lot of attention on Weibo, China’s version of Twitter.

“That’s a good example of ‘Enjoying life at the moment.’ The old man enjoys it. And it’s making me happy too!” writes one user, whose handle translates to “Kite walking on the ground.”

 Comments on Weibo

@S_ziming writes: “I love this grandpa! And I hope life for all elderly people can be as interesting and colorful.”

@GuYue adds: “Neither fish nor fowl, inappropriate.”

But others aren’t so sure: “Is he crazy, being weird and mess around like this?”

Liu’s fame has also translated into higher sales for the fledgling company, which only launched in May,2012.

Sales have surged fivefold since his image appeared on the site, an unforeseen benefit according to Lv. She wasn’t intended to raise the sales. It was just for fun, for both her grandfather and herself. She was surprised that this went viral online. However, it is obvious that Lv’s grandfather loves the attention.

“My grandfather is happier than before, he enjoys being interviewed; he calls our relatives at our hometown about his experiences here in the city,” – Lv Ting (CNN.CHINA)

Lv said she had no intention of hiring any other “older” models. And no, he wasn’t paid. The range of clothes Liu models has now been dubbed “Grandpa style.” And they’ll take more photos, Lv says, as long as Liu enjoys it.

This is an interesting and successful case of fashion PR, even though it happened without planning.

  • A 72-year-old grandfather has become an Internet hit after modeling young fashion. Fashion PR could be an expert to break common rules.
  • The Grandpa Style photos online have attracted a lot of talk on social media and it brought a large amount of traffic to the small online shop in Taobao. The young storeowner has succeeded to attract attention from the public.

Just as the interesting Grandpa Style, fashion can also be easy and approachable only if you were creative enough isn’t it?

  1. The grandpa is making their brand really famous but I dont think they sell well as their fame..coz the clothes are not really good. But it is fun and some people will be interested in purchasing their products because the grandpa ha ha.

  2. I am taking grandpa style, I am taking grandpa style.
I think this means there will be more opportunities for Chinese designers and unique creative brands.
    Taobao is a great platform!!
